Why help Enfants du Ningxia?
Elisabeth Megevand, a teacher at the French International School of Hong Kong explains:
‘The project that binds Enfants du Ningxia and our school together is a project that is particularly important to us, not only because of the help given to the children of Ningxia and the humanitarian dimension of the associations’ actions, but also for several other reasons. Of course, living in China, it was important to us to work in cooperation with a NGO working in this country. Furthermore, it increases our student’s awareness of a difficult reality. Throughout the year, they must look for sponsors, organise several events and help in many very formative fields (presentation evenings, creating posters, surveys, etc.).
We have set up a correspondence program between our students and the students in Ningxia. During the course of this program, students are confronted by a very new situation but in a well-known environment. There is a vast difference between exchanging letters with Chinese students and normal Chinese classes. The sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects a of a language, which are rarely addressed in purely academic teaching, are present project in all their breadth and full meaning.’
How?
Each year, students in their 5th year of secondary school go to Ningxia in order to allocate school materials to the schools that need it. Supervised by the team of the French International School, they organise many events throughout the year in order to raise money for new school materials and the financing of several scholarships.
